Journalism with Zoe Hunter and Carmen Hall

Understand the behind the scenes workings of being a journalist, we might all have our preconceptions of what that is, and so hearing from two seasoned and talented campaigners will be very interesting.  Hear their journey, some of the funny stories, and some of the heartbreaking events that are covered by these experienced journalists.

CARMEN:
I am a great believer that anything is possible. I left high school with no qualifications and was a teenage mother. I went back to school as a mature student and enrolled in a Diploma in Journalism course in 1998. I have been involved in the media industry ever since. I have worked in numerous community and regional newspapers around New Zealand and have held a variety of different roles. In 2018, I was named the Voyager Regional Reporter of the Year. This was a career highlight but by no means, in my view, my greatest achievement. I love the news, telling people's stories and reporting without fear or favour. More than a year ago, I changed rounds, to give a bigger voice to businesses in our region. I am passionate about this and in awe of the great achievements that are being accomplished every day, despite the challenges, by women who push the boundaries and are at the forefront of their own enterprises. These efforts can only inspire the future generation regardless of their circumstances or barriers.

ZOE:
I wanted to be two things after graduating college: A writer and a dancer. So, I chose to study a Bachelor of Communications and a Diploma in Journalism at Waikato Institute of Technology and fill in my downtime as a cheerleader for the Chiefs as well as teaching dance back home at the Mount.
I landed a job straight out of study at a local weekly community newspaper and later moved to the fast-paced daily newsroom at NZME’s Bay of Plenty Times. For nearly 10 years, I have covered various news rounds, with property and small business becoming my specialities. I have had the privilege of bringing NZME’s newest publication Money to our readers, reporting on the region’s biggest news in business, property and finance alongside Carmen Hall. In one of New Zealand’s fastest-growing regions, business journalism is a vital component and it is a pleasure to be able to bring a bit of female flare to reporting on this important sector of our community.

Join us for a chance to network.  Doors open from 5.00pm.

COVID-19 Protection Framework & Chamber Events

The Chamber will host events (including training courses) with vaccination entry requirements under the NZ Government’s new COVID-19 Protection Framework.

Operating in this way is essential for providing certainty for our business community, as it means we will be able to hold events under each level, instead of needing to cancel or postpone due to COVID-19.

This means all attendees to any Chamber event will need to provide proof of double vaccination when checking in to our events using the vaccination certificate from My Vaccine Pass.

Under the Protection Framework, face coverings are still recommended and, in some instances, are mandatory. All attendees are also required to scan in using the supplied QR Code.

Cancellations must be received prior to 10am the day before the event or training seminar. Any cancellation and/or changes must be made in writing to events@tauranga.org.nz Cancellations after this time or non attendance will require payment, however substitutions are welcome.
