If you have ever read the famous books, Denniston Rose and Heart of Coal by Jenny Pattrick, you will love to hear Ellen of Denniston by author Val Millington, Ellen’s daughter and our soon to be guest speaker! We are lucky enough for Val to speak to us on September 24 at the Tauranga Club at 11am! And you are invited to this event! Her book, published at the end of last year, is now in its third reprint!
The true story takes place on the same mountain top of that fascinating coal mining town, Denniston, on the West Coast of the South Island. This book, however is not a novel, it's a true life story (endorsed by Jenny Pattrick on the cover of the book. ) Ellen’s life as one of six children growing up in the snow- capped township with a musical family, was very happy until one day a great tragedy struck in Ellen’s own school classroom where she should have been safe. But this book although it has trauma and tragedy, is ultimately a story of joy, of how to choose happiness over sadness and what might have been, of how to live life to the full, after trauma, by choosing how you think. It’s also a love story when Ellen meets the wonderful Les, worthy of a book himself. Ellen, ultimately won many awards for success, including NZ tourism awards and a QSM for significantly aiding in the development of the Fieldays at Mystery Creek. She appeared on Maggie’s Garden Show for her gardening ability becoming a news media darling for her many other achievements too.
Come and hear Valerie talk about how she came to write the book, the life of her mum, and the huge impact this story has had on lives. You are invited to hear Val speak at The Tauranga Club, with its magnificent views. . Stay for lunch after….. etc etc
Val is a former CEO, , a well known writer including an author of a number of local history books, a marriage and funeral celebrant a tutor of creative writing, a public speaking coach, a Paul Harris Fellow, a Justice of the Peace and an engaging public speaker. She is currently writing a novel set in moody peat lands. Ellen of Denniston, will be a powerful and moving speech. Don’t miss this special occasion.
